Who we are
Gil Skillman is a seasoned Connecticut musician who’s been performing with bands across the state for decades. A multi-instrumentalist on guitar, dobro, cuatro, and banjo, Gil brings both musical range and a songwriter’s imagination to every performance. When he’s not onstage, he’s in the classroom as a Professor of Economics at Wesleyan University.
Katie Morneault grew up surrounded by music, singing harmonies with her siblings and learning piano at an early age. In recent years, she’s found a new home in bluegrass, bringing her voice and guitar to the mix and beginning to develop her own songwriting along the way. A former member of the Connecticut bluegrass band String Theory, Katie joined Mattabesset in 2025.
Classically trained on violin, Rebecca McCallum took a turn toward folk music shortly after college and never looked back. She spent years performing with the acclaimed contradance band The Groovemongers, bringing energy and drive to dance halls across the region. After moving to Connecticut, she joined Mattabesset around 2009, expanding her style and stepping more fully into singing. In recent years, she’s been diving into bluegrass, while continuing to play for Scottish and English folk dancing.
Tony Hernandez anchors Mattabesset with bass lines that bring both groove and grounding to the band’s sound. Widely respected as a much-in-demand live sound engineer for folk festivals across the Northeast and Midwest, Tony began playing bass while spending summers working at the Augusta Heritage Center in West Virginia. He joined Mattabesset in 2022.
